an exerpt from an e-letter i get from myersinstitute.net:

Yesterday afternoon on the way to the airport I was
listening to Sean Hannity interview guests at the DNC
and was amazed. The people he was interviewing hated
everything Sean stood for, yet they liked Sean. He
got flaming leftists to laugh at his questions. Other
conservative commentators wouldn't get the time of
day and might even be assaulted.

There's a good lesson to be learned here--you can have
strong views without being disagreeable. It all depends
on how you encounter people. You've heard that "First
impressions are lasting impressions," well, here's a
way to interact with those with opposing viewpoints
by remembering the acronym F. I. R. S. T.:

F=Focus on the other person. Maintain a genuine interest
in the other person and you will appear "confidently
humble" rather than arrogant.

I=Inquire about their interests. Find out what the
other person cares about. Ask questions about the
"four H's": hopes, heroes, hobbies and heart.

R=Remember that they are made in God's image. Regardless
of your impression of others, they are created in God's
image and have inestimable value. Treat them that way.

S=Smile. A smile brightens your whole countenance and
warms the hearts of others.

T=Tell about yourself. Only as a last step should you
talk about what interests you. As you do, seek to
relate it to their interests, and always end the
conversation with words of encouragement.

God bless and make it a great week!
